B.O.L.O.

No, I’m not referring to the tie…

BOLO Tie

I’m referring to the other BOLO:  Be On the LookOut.

BOLO Wanted Person

Imagine there has just been a bank robbery.

Law enforcement puts out a BOLO – an alert or broadcast message used to share information about a person(s) of interest – so that others can be on the lookout for the suspect(s).

The BOLO is key to identifying and apprehending the suspect(s), potentially preventing future (in this case) bank robberies by the suspect(s).

And, without first gathering key details about the suspect(s) – from eyewitness statements, CCTV footage, etc – the BOLO would be useless.

Good News:  No banks were robbed in the writing of this (at least none in which I was involved!).

Bad News:  Every day, you are confronted by suspect(s) attempting to rob you of our happiness.

And, alarmingly, it’s an “inside job!”

Even more alarming – the suspect(s) actually think they’re doing you a favor!

Take this 5-minute quiz if you’re curious to know WHO has been stealing/sabotaging your happiness!

Some of the “usual suspects” are

  • Judge
  • Avoider
  • Controller
  • Hyper-Achiever
  • Hyper-Rational
  • Hyper-Vigilant
  • Pleaser
  • Restless
  • Stickler
  • Victim

Question is:  Which one is sabotaging you? Would you be able to describe the suspect(s) with enough detail to put out a BOLO?

Mindfulness is the skill needed to do that…and mindfulness, like other skills, can be a habit.

Mindfulness is an essential component of happiness because it allows you to identify (amongst everything else) the suspect(s) that are stealing your happiness.

That’s why The Mindfulness Habit (check out this post) is the next habit in the Habits of Happiness series.

It is possible to:

  1. Learn a new way to think about mindfulness – identifying the subconscious source of your thoughts, sensations, and impulses.
  2. Learn how to develop a mindfulness practice that is worth repeating until it becomes a habit.
